PRINCIPLE PURPOSE OF ROLE
The Creative Engagement programme at Lighthouse offers opportunities for our communities, young people, and artists to develop their creativity. As one of the largest regional arts centres in the UK our aim is to create a sustainable and inclusive programme of creative engagement that connects more people with Lighthouse – enriching lives and sharing the benefit of taking part in cultural activity at all life stages.
Lighthouse Youth Theatre (LYT) launches in September 2026 and is funded by Arbor Vitae Foundation. The Youth Theatre Teacher will be responsible for teaching all the Saturday sessions within our brand new programme of high quality and inclusive youth theatre sessions for young people age 5-15.
PROGRAMME DESIGN
- To work with the Youth Theatre Leader to design an inclusive, engaging and age-appropriate youth theatre programme for young people aged 5-15.
- To work with the Youth Theatre leader to plan out the lesson structure to ensure continued development and positive learning outcomes for young people.
- Collaborate with the Youth Theatre Leader and other creatives to produce an end of year showcase.
PROGRAMME DELIVERY
- To ensure the programme is delivered in line with the Lighthouse’s safeguarding policy
- Create a positive, inclusive atmosphere that encourages self-confidence, creativity, and skill development for the young people.
- Work alongside the Youth Theatre Leader during the term to monitor and adapt the programme to fit the needs of participants.
- Support attendance at wraparound enrichment events and opportunities.
- Attend events related to Lighthouse’s Creative Engagement programme, as required.
- Facilitate weekly sessions for young people aged 5-15 in accordance with the outlined programme.
COMMUNICATION
- Give regular updates to the Youth Theatre Leader on the progress of the sessions and update any need to adjust the programme or approach.
- Act as a point of contact for parents in Youth Theatre Leader’s absence.
EVALUATION
- Keep a clear record of attendance and contribute towards any evaluation that is required by the Youth Theatre Leader.
GENERAL
- Engage in professional development (CPD) opportunities as advised by Creative Engagement Manager.
- Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Youth Theatre Leader.
- Adhere to all of Lighthouse’s policies and procedures.
- Embrace and promote inclusivity and relevance throughout all aspects of work.
- Ensure that Lighthouse’s diversity aims are considered throughout the Lighthouse Youth Theatre programme.
- Ensure that Lighthouse’s values are applied to all areas of work and responsibility.
- Minimise Lighthouse’s environmental impact wherever possible.
- Be a positive role model for the young people of Lighthouse Youth Theatre while representing Lighthouse at all times.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Experienced in delivering youth theatre sessions or drama sessions to young people.
- Experience of designing youth theatre sessions.
- Understanding of safeguarding.
- Passion for the Arts and making it accessible for the entire community.
- Empathetic with children and young people, and a fervent belief of the importance of the Arts in their lives.
- Ability to operate in a professional manner in a fast-moving environment.
- Ability to use own initiative and work independently.
- Excellent communication with good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
- DBS checked (or willingness to undergo a DBS check).
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
- Qualification and/or training in arts/drama or relevant field.
- Experience of working in visual arts.
- Safeguarding trained
- Experienced in directing youth theatre productions.
- First Aid trained (or willingness to have First Aid training)
